Why aren't Day Schools open before YT? - KSA 165:11

The teacher is bound to teach the children the whole day and also part of the night and the only interruption is erev Shabbos and erev YT

Source given is fn 20 in SA YD 245:11,12,13

So how is it that our Day Schools give off many days before Yamim Tovim? This seems to contradict the Halachah here..

Why didn't you ask about inyana deyoma -- winter break? Or two plus months for summer?

Lemaaseh, today's kids are soft and need more vacation than Yom Tov plus a day. As did we. Maybe it's because limudei chol makes the school day longer than the QSA assumes. I don't know. But we can argue that since they need the breaks in order to maximize retention (and reduce drop-out rates), these aren't really interruptions in chinukh.

Parents may need extra help with chores at home to prepare for the Yom Tov.

It's not the kids who are soft, it's the teachers. Our school gives the teachers the day off after parent-teacher interviews because of the "stress" the evening's proceedings put on them.
Puh-leeze.
