«Are there Starbucks in Italy?
One of my best friends is moving to Italy, and I want to get him a gift card he can use in the US and Italy. He likes coffee so I thought of Starbucks, but are there those in Italy,
Best Answer:
There are no Starbucks in italy...
The motivations are...
1) Starbucks is based on the Italian espresso bars culture
2) Italians don't like to drink coffee while walking or driving

France:
«After eight years spent setting up 63 French Starbucks stores, the company has never turned a profit in France. And even in the parts of Europe where the company does make money, sales and profit growth lag far behind results in the Americas and Asia. Europe's debt crisis and sluggish economy are a factor. So are high European rents and labor costs, which impinge on profits more than in any other region in which Starbucks operates. But the biggest challenge may lie in tailoring the Starbucks experience to appeal to a variety of European tastes.»

Comment:
When Starbucks pulled out of Israel I heard then that the reason was that they simply could not compete with the local cafes.

"Starbucks didn't remove itself from Israel because it was pro-Arab or anti-Israeli; it did so because this was the business decision that appeared to make the best sense.... the reasons for the retreat were Starbucks' difficulties in dealing with its Israeli partner and the underperformance of its six stores in that country. (Starbucks was a latecomer to an already-saturated Israeli market, didn't adapt well to local market conditions, and offered little to distinguish itself from its competition except higher prices)...."
